Owning a leather mask is a wonderful experience. They are both durable and beautiful, and with a little care will give you many years of delight. They are not indestructible, however, and so here are a few basic guideline for keeping your mask in top shape.
Temperature and Humidity
Leather was once the skin of an animal, and as such is sensitive to changes in temperature and humidity. Your leather mask was originally formed using water and heat to cause the leather to take shape, and if you expose it to enough water or heat it will loose it shape. Do not wear your mask in the rain, or immerse your mask in water. Do not leave your mask in a high temperature situation like a non climate controlled storage, or a hot car. Sweating and theatre lights are usually not a problem, however if your mask does begin to soften carefully store it on a basic white plastic mask form or styrofoam head (available from craft stores) until it dries completely.
Your mask in general should not need to be cleaned. If something is spilled on your mask, or it becomes dusty use a soft damp cloth to gently wipe the surface. I highly recommend barely damp microfiber cloths. Do not use harsh chemicals or hard scrubbing to clean your mask. This will violate the protective coating and cause damage to the paint.
Your mask is a finished product when you receive it. It has already been treated with a protective clear acrylic sealer, and does not need to be waxed, scotch-guarded, or coated in any way. If you add any kind of further paint or coating to your mask, you assume complete responsibility for the results.
Scratches and Broken Ties, Feathers, Ribbons, Ornaments
As wonderful as Pilgrimage masks are, sometimes things like ribbons, elastic, feathers and ornamentation can wear out or the surface of the mask can become scratched or stained. Storing your mask in dedicated box, or on the wall when it is not being used will help to prevent wear and tear. If your mask does become damaged, please contact us and we will make every effort to fix or replace it to your satisfaction. Depending on the type and cause of damage, there may be a small charge for repair services.
